Performa: The Newcomers

November 10-19, 2017

Presented as part of Performa 17, the international visual arts biennial dedicated to exploring the critical role of live performance, American architects and artists Alex Schweder and Ward Shelley present The Newcomers, a live, durational architectural performance. Joined by collaborators Lena Kouvela and Sarah Burns, the group builds and lives in an evolving structure that moves its way across the 28 Liberty Plaza over the course of 10 days. Each day, the structure changes from temporary home to makeshift bridge in order to reach the next day’s supplies. The artists welcome dialogue with observers as they work, challenging everyone to think beyond traditional, permanent views of architecture.
